Duke Cancer Institute is the host premier benefactor cancer center for next year’s North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program Survivorship Summit — “You Are Not Alone” — to be held April 27 and April 28, 2017 at Hilton North Raleigh/Midtown, 3415 Wake Forest Road, in Raleigh.
The annual summit, presented this year by Duke Cancer Institute, serves as a key strategy in focusing on all areas of the cancer continuum as laid out in the North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan.
The mission of the 2017 summit is to bring together North Carolina cancer survivors in a safe and relaxed environment to share their experiences and learn about the latest cancer treatments and research, explore psychosocial issues, and gain self-advocacy skills. The summit is meant to enhance the empowerment of survivors throughout their lives.
In its 10th year, the state summit has attracted nearly 1,800 cancer survivors, advocates and caregivers from 62 North Carolina counties who have engaged in 279 educational sessions. Ninety-four percent of participants in the summit from 2013 to 2016 said that they now know more about their overall good health than they did before attending.
The first day of the 2017 summit will focus on activities related to health and wellness, including mental-emotional classes (journaling, aromatherapy, hypnosis, meditation, art and music therapy), physical activities (T’ai Chi, pilates, yoga, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulative medicine, stretching), sessions on spirituality, and opportunities for social interaction.
The second day will have a survivorship empowerment theme and will include sessions on financial support, substance abuse, access to care and treatment (advance directives, volunteerism, patient navigation, pain and palliative care), nutrition, intimacy, and self-image and self-esteem.
The summit will be held at the Hilton North Raleigh/Midtown, 3415 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 919.872.2323. Please use the group rate code: SURV.
