P. Kelly Marcom, MD, associate professor of medicine, was recently selected by Duke University Hospital to receive the Strength, Hope and Caring Physician Award.

The Strength, Hope and Caring program rewards Duke faculty and staff who exceed expectations and whose actions reflect the organization’s core – providing strength to those who are suffering, hope to those served and care beyond the clinical sense of the word.

“Dr. Marcom is a real-life superhero. He treats each patient as if he or she is the only one he is taking care of and is sensitive to a patient’s concerns and fears,” wrote patient Kim Taronji in nominating Marcom for the award. “In every interaction, he always goes above and beyond to provide you the care needed. I live three and a half hours away from Duke, but I can remember multiple times that I found myself in a medical emergency situation. Dr. Marcom worked seamlessly with my local emergency department, no matter the distance.”

Marcom received his medical degree in 1989 from Baylor University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Duke University. Marcom is director of the breast cancer program at Duke Cancer Institute.

“Dr. Marcom is why I drive seven hours roundtrip for my cancer care,” continued Taronji. “I trust him, and I know I’m in wonderful hands with the entire staff at Duke.”

The Strength, Hope and Caring Award includes five categories: Clinical, Non-Clinical, Physician, Leadership and Team. Nominations for the awards are reviewed by the program’s committee, a subset of the hospital’s Human Resources Advisory Group.

Winners are presented with a certificate and an SHC program logo pin. Each year the hospital hosts a Strength, Hope and Caring Gala to celebrate awardees from throughout the previous year. An additional award is given at the gala to one deserving awardee from each of the five categories.
