The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) has named Thomas W. LeBlanc, MD, MA, a 2015 Inspirational Leader Under 40.

“Through innovation, education, mentoring and clinical care, these individuals are enhancing care for seriously ill patients and their families,” said academy president Jean S. Kutner, MD, MSPH, FAAHPM.

LeBlanc was selected from up to 5,000 possible member nominees. He was recognized for his innovation in and dedication to the medical specialty of hospice and palliative medicine and AAHPM.

“Palliative care is actually not end-of-life care and it’s not the same as hospice care,” said LeBlanc, a 2006 Duke University School of Medicine graduate. “It’s specialized medical care for patients dealing with serious illness, such as cancer. What’s really unique about a place like Duke and the Duke Cancer Institute is that patients can come here and get palliative care as part of their high-quality comprehensive cancer care. Palliative care is something many other places just can’t offer.”

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality palliative care, advancing the discipline of hospice and palliative medicine through professional education and training, the development of a specialist workforces, support for clinical practice standards and research and public policy.

LeBlanc is a cell therapy and hematologic malignancies specialist as well as a medical oncologist and palliative medicine specialist.

“My research aims to improve our understanding of patients’ experiences living with a blood cancer diagnosis, with an eye towards developing interventions that improve symptom burden, distress and quality of life,” LeBlanc said.

LeBlanc was recognized Thursday, Feb. 26, at the AAHPM Annual Assembly in Philadelphia. He is featured in a Feb. post on the AAHPM Blog. In the post LeBlanc acknowledges those who have most influenced his work in hospice and palliative medicine.
