Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina is inviting you to pack your bags and join them as they journey “Around the World in 80 Wishes.” This gala event commemorates the adventurous journeys children take during their Make-A-Wish experiences. In honor of his work in pediatric cancer, this year’s Make-A-Wish Shooting Star award will be presented to Michael B. Kastan, MD, PhD, executive director of the Duke Cancer Institute.
“Dr. Kastan has been a leading voice at multiple national organizations, pushing the envelope for improved care and outcomes for children and adults with all types of cancer,” said Rick Deckelbaum, board chairman for the Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. “Dr. Kastan’s discoveries have greatly shaped our understanding of both how cancers develop and how they respond to therapies. His contribution to pediatric oncology directly impacts the many Wish Kids who battle with cancer-related illnesses.”
Sridharan Gururangan, MRCP (UK), director of Pediatric Clinical Services and attending pediatric neuro-oncologist with The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, will receive Caregiver of The Year.
“Dr. Gururangan supports our chapter and refers patients to our chapter as potential wish recipients are critical to the delivery of our mission,” said Deckelbaum. “Dr. Guruangan’s game-changing research has led to clinical protocols that are improving the survival of children with brain stem gliomas and other malignant brain tumors. He is adored by his patients and our wish families.”
The black tie event will feature a program highlighting several of the 2,900 children who have been granted wishes during the chapter’s 28-year history. The evening will include a VIP cocktail party, silent and live auctions, a plated dinner and a lively after party.
“Around the World in 80 Wishes” will be held Saturday, April 18, at the Raleigh Convention Center, 500 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh. Cocktails and Silent Auction begin at 6 p.m. The program begins at 7:45 p.m. Sponsorship packages are available. For more information and to make reservations call 919.821.7111.
