We are here to help you make next steps. We team with Duke University Law School to offer legal support. Our patient navigators and financial care counselors are ready to help you weigh the options available to help overcome barriers to care.
Whether you need medical assistance, Power of Attorney or suggestions for discounted nearby lodging, we can assist.
Available Services
Patient Navigation
Duke Cancer Center Patient Navigators are available to make sure that nothing stops you and your family from getting the support you need. They will talk with you to find out what barriers you’re coming up against, then connect you with the right people, services and information. They can get you connected with support for financial issues, traveling to the Center, long-term housing, getting help at home and much more. Available before, during and after treatment. Financial Support
Financial counseling Financial Care Counselors at Duke Cancer Center can help if you're having difficulty meeting the costs of your care. They'll tell you about funding programs you might be eligible for that may reduce the amount you have to pay yourself. They'll also talk you through billing, payment and financial assistance, such as payment plans or charity care. Learn more at Duke Health.
Medical Assistance Counselors Our Medical Assistance Counselors do eligibility screening for Medicaid, and will help you with the application process for adult, disability or family coverage if you are eligible. For more information, please call 919.613.9675.
Advocacy & Legal
Patient Advocates Here at Duke we do everything we can to make your experience as smooth as possible. However, if you do have any concerns, our patient representatives can act as advocates for you and your family. They'll listen to and follow up on your concerns, answer questions, or direct your request to the appropriate hospital department. They can also arrange for special services and direct you to resources in the community. To request an advocate or to learn more, call 919.681.2020.
Legal Support Duke Law School’s Health Care Planning Project offers legal assistance to prepare important documents (eg, Health Care Power of Attorney, Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney) at no cost for patients receiving cancer care at Duke. Law student volunteers and supervising attorneys are available to offer these free services to clients through the monthly legal clinics, located in Duke Cancer Center's Patient Resource Center (in-person and video available) in Durham. Lodging Support
Caring House Caring House is a non-profit that offers a supportive, friendly environment for you and your caregiver. Rooms are $40 per night and available for both long- and short-term stays. For more information, call 919.490.5449. Financial support is available.
American Cancer Society Rooms The American Cancer Society (ACS), in partnership with Extended Stay America, is donating 50,000 rooms to cancer patients each year for the next two years. Of those 50,000 rooms nationwide, 10,000 are free, 20,000 are at a reduced rate of $19 per night, and another 20,000 rooms are at an ACS patient rate of 25% off the full rate. Hotels When making hotel reservations, be sure to ask about shuttle services and a medical room rate. Many local hotels offer discounts to patients receiving care at the Duke Cancer Center, and Duke Concierge Services partners with select hotels and inns to secure special medical rates. Host Homes Duke Patient Information Services sponsors our Host Homes program, giving you the opportunity to stay in a private home while you receive care at the Duke Cancer Center. A nominal, need-based fee is charged. For more information, call 919.681.4688.
Volunteer
More than 175 volunteers serve at Duke Cancer Center. Our volunteers provide conversation and comfort, offer refreshments and help patients find locations and resources.
