Duke Oncologists Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

For a sixth year, Duke Cancer Institute is teaming up with the American Cancer Society (ACS) as local presenting sponsor for its October Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. This year's walk will held at Midtown Park at North Hills in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday, Oct. 19. 

The 2018 brought together more than 2,500 participants who raised more than $300,000. 

Radiation oncologist Rachel Blitzblau, MD, PhD; and surgical oncologist Jennifer Plichta, MD; serve as this year's honorary team captains for Team Duke Cancer Center Durham. Surgical oncologist Gayle DiLalla, MD, leads Team Duke Women's Cancer Care Raleigh. DiLalla also serves on the board of trustees for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society awards millions of dollars in cancer research grants each year. Since 1957, Duke has been awarded almost $47 million. Last year, Duke recieve more than $2.5 million in research grants from the American Cancer Society. This year, ACS in fuding more than $5.5 million in active grants at Duke. 

Making Strides organizers will host a kick-off soiree for walk participants, breast cancer survivors and sponsors on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. at Renaissance North Hills Hotel in Raleigh.
