Caring House Breaks Ground on Expanded Facility

July 23 marked the groundbreaking for the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Caring House, an organization that has provided comfortable, supportive, and affordable housing for adult cancer patients receiving care at DCI clinics for more than 20 years.

The ceremony marks the beginning of construction on Caring House's expanded facility, which will enable the organization to serve twice as many cancer patients and caregivers.

DCI leaders joined Caring House's founders, Board of Directors, and representatives from the SECU Foundation at the celebration. Michael Kastan, MD, PhD, executive director for the DCI, spoke at the event and acknowledged the Caring House team as supportive partners in the DCI's mission to discover, develop and deliver the future of cancer care.

"Since opening our doors in 1992, Caring House has partnered with DCI to provide a home away from home for patients traveling to Durham for treatment," said Sasha Zarzour, executive director of SECU Caring House. "Expanding our capacity has long been a goal, and we are thrilled to finally break ground. This milestone not only marks the next chapter in our collaboration with DCI, but also ensures we can extend healing lodging and a supportive community to more patients."
