AYA STEPS (Health Management After Cancer Treatment)

What is the Purpose of this Study?

We are doing this study to find out if a program called AYA STEPS has a positive benefit for young people who are treated for cancer. We want to know how well this program can help cancer survivors younger than 40 manage any physical or emotional symptoms they have after treatment, and we also want to see if the program can help them be more engaged with follow-up care.

What is the Condition Being Studied?

Physical and Emotional Symptoms Following Cancer Treatment

Who Can Participate in the Study?

Adults ages 18-39 who were diagnosed with one of the following cancers (stages I-III):

  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Lymphoma
  • Testicular cancer (stages I-II only)

Participants must have been diagnosed between 1 and 5 years ago, and they must have completed their active cancer treatment at least 3 months ago.

What is Involved?

If you choose to take part in the study, we will ask you to complete a series of survey assessments at the following timepoints:

  • When you join the study
  • 3 months after joining the study
  • 6 months after joining the study
  • 12 months after joining the study

These surveys will ask you about things like your background and cancer history, physical and mental health, symptoms you may have, and how you are engaged with your health care.

When you finish your first set of surveys at the beginning of the study, you will get a random assignment (like a coin flip) to either take part in the AYA STEPS program or an existing, standardized educational information program. You will participate in 6 one-hour skills training sessions over Zoom during the first 3 months of the study.

You will also get access to a study application during the study, and get bi-weekly text messages that will include tips for managing symptoms, reminders for skills use, and reinforcing messages.
