Carmem Bonfim, MD, PhD, is a professor of Pediatrics and the Scientific Director of the Pediatric Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at Duke University, Durham, NC, USA. She is also a senior consultant at the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at Hospital Pequeno Principe, Professor at the Pele Pequeno Principe Research Institute and at the Federal University of Parana in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. She is a co-chair of the Non-malignant working Party of the CIBMTR, co-chair of the Engineering Stem Cell Committee of the ISCT, co-chair of the Patient Advocacy Committee of the WBMT, and the Scientific Director of the Brazilian BMT Society (SBTMO). She is part of the Board of Directors of the Fanconi Anemia Cancer Foundation and a board member of the EBMT Hemoglobinopathies and Pediatric Diseases Working Party. She was the past vice-president for the Latin American BMT Society. Her major areas of interest and publications are- Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) for patients with Inherited and Acquired Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes, Primary Immunodeficiencies, Inborn Errors of Metabolism and the use of haploidentical HCT with the post-transplantation cyclophosphamide platform for nonmalignant diseases. Dr. Bonfim has also a deep interest in international issues related to HCT, especially in developing countries.
